Everyone wishes for their children to become adults with high morals and values. We want to for them to righteous adults who give back to society and have great principles. However, not many parents understand how they could raise honest kids without always lecturing them on what’s right and what’s wrong. And that’s understandable too because most children are repulsive to lectures and instructions.

They are more likely to do what you forbid them to do. If you are battling this issue too, here are a few tips that you could use to teach your kids the importance of ethics. Using these tips will help you make your child understand how being ethical is important.

Practice What You Preach

Your children always look up to you for life lessons and inspiration. This means they’re learning from you, even when you’re not putting to “teach” them. So, watch your actions always. Be careful of how you talk and act around your child, even if you’re not addressing them directly. If you want to raise your child with great morals and values, you should demonstrate these ideologies in your life too.

For instance, you cannot teach your child to be honest and not lie, if you’re doing it often. Something as simple as a harmful white lie to tell to avoid work could also be sending a strong message to your little one. So, before teaching your child about ethics, make sure you’re in the right place. And make amends to your life choices too. Remember, it’s never too late to be a better version of you!

Reward Desirable Behavior

Every time your child demonstrates a positive behavior, make sure to acknowledge and reward it. Positive reinforcement goes a lot way in building acceptable behavior. You could have stars and rewards for every member of the family when they demonstrate acceptable behavior.

Having a chart with stars for every time your child did the right thing will be rewarding too. You could also make this a game and adapt one ethical value you want your child to develop, assign a day to it, and make sure everyone follows it that day. For instance, if Tuesday is for honesty or truth, you could add a star to every time the child could have said a lie. But instead, choose to be truthful. Rewards go a long way in shaping a child, so be generous! And remember that rewards need not always be monetary.

Do Not Confuse With Contradicting Behavior

It is also important not to confuse them with contradicting behavior. For instance, when you promise your child, there would be no punishment if they come clean about a mistake and punish them anyway, you’re doing more harm than good. That’s because it confuses your little one, and they might believe that lying, stealing, or any wrongful behavior is fine as long as they don’t get caught.

Besides that, they see that you lied about not punishing them. So, you’re leading your child on the exact opposite track of where you want actually to take them. Instead, teach them to own up to their mistakes, and reward them for coming clean, and then tell them why their behavior was wrong. This will teach them to be more responsible, honest, and ethical.

Communicate Not Lecture

Talk to your children like equals rather than talking down to them and lecturing them always. Making your child feel like a mature adult, and an equal will help them be more willing to learn. You could engage them in a conversation and ask them what they think of a particular behavior. Quizzing them on why they think a certain reaction or act is right or wrong will help them understand things better.

And encourage the child to talk about situations where they took a stand to be in line with their ethical values. In turn, you should share from your personal experiences too. This will teach them that an ethical dilemma is something that everyone battles with, no matter their age or position. But what’s important is to stick by what is right and do it, no matter the price.
