The Internet is 21’st Century’s most prominent and useful platform. However, with the unlimited benefits also arise some serious problems. A wide range of consumers and businesses all over the world rely almost completely on the internet. But the bitter reality about this is that the internet isn’t always used for the benefit of all. Many people use the internet to do all sorts of activities which violated the ethical codes. Unethical use of computers and the internet continues to grow like wildfire. Following are some prominent violations of online user ethical codes.
Media Piracy
Media piracy has to be one of the most widespread unethical activity that almost every other person does. Piracy basically means the illegal distribution of music, books, Researches, as well as other intellectual properties. Also, Piracy is not easy to catch since the internet is a vast and diverse space. Furthermore, Piracy costs many businesses and consumers millions of dollars worth of loss every single day. The biggest crimes that such criminals do involves infringement of intellectual property which is also punishable by the US law. A good example of this could be when some businesses use a particular song to promote their product without citing proper credits to the owner.
Identity Theft
Another prominent crime that investigators have found is the online identity theft. Many businesses face this increasing threat to the loss of their consumer’s data as identity theft is more concerned on the consumers. Businesses from Banks to Uber all have credit details and important credentials of their clients on their framework. Companies of all sizes are prone to sudden and unprecedented cyber attacks, in these cases, Hackers get their hands on all kinds of data including names, social security number etc to create phony accounts and use them for their criminal agendas. This has caused some serious uproar among the cybersecurity facilitators of US as alot of people were faced with charges for crimes they didn’t commit.
Virtual Plagiarism
Plagiarism is said to affect two independent entities number one being the original source/author and the individual who copies the intellectual property. this includes articles, essays or research papers copied from other authors which are often available online for educational purposes. This ethical violation goes a long way, not only does it affect the rights of the author it also corrupts the abuser for a lifetime. Alleged research confirms such individuals end up making a career out of infringement of intellectual properties of other people.
Financial Theft
Financial theft is one of the most damaging types of internet ethical violations. Hackers normally acquire credit/debit cards related information of the clients by hacking into a certain business website. In some severe cases, certain hackers even hack into the servers of nonprofit organizations and transfer the donations to their own offshore bank accounts. This practice has led to not just the loss of the money but also the belief of people who donate.
Attacks For Ransom
As we discussed before, the internet is surely a magical wonderful space where anything can happen to you if you are not careful. a lot of people often end up getting hacked due to some spam mail they receive or a virus inflicted on many companies. Many hackers hack into the personal information of people by hacking into their mobile phones too. They often find usable data or images that they acquire and blackmail the individual. A wide number of politicians, businessman and important figures are always on the threat in this manner.
In the end, whenever you use internet services always keep in mind that hacking is literally done by one simple yes to a spam email. Always keep your credentials safe and hidden, only give your information to officially recognized websites. And, if you know anyone in your circle who you might think is responsible for any of the actions always report that person.
